The book Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler’s Shadow is quite powerful. It begins when Hitler became the chancellor of Germany. It goes on to discuss his rise to power, organizing the youth, and the brutality of the times. The book is full of pictures—children in Nazi uniforms, young girls with their arms in the air “hailing” Hitler, and Jews at concentration camps. The book gives a thorough look at how Hitler Youth came to be, and what it was like to participate in the organization. First person accounts give you an idea what it must have felt like to be there. The reality that people went through is surreal. The propaganda that Hitler was able to spread to these children was incredible.
It is important for the students to understand this happened. Students need to understand why the Hitler Youth followed Hitler. They need to understand what was going on in the minds of the boys that went to war for Germany. The book also lets them know that not all Germans felt the same way. Hopefully this will help them see the other side of the war.
We know there were young boys that fought in the war for America, but how much do we know about Germany’s youth? Hitler Youth contributed in a large way to the war. They had many services that they performed for Hitler. This book is eye-opening to what it was like to be a child in Germany.
This book would be a great resource to help get the German insight. It tells stories from all sides. This can help students understand the point of view of the boys and girls their age, and why they may have felt drawn to help Hitler accomplish his goals. Whether we agree or not, maybe the students will understand the power of brainwashing and how slanted the media can be.
The book educates on the roles people took in the war. This book talks about what happened to the boys and girls who did help Hitler and his Mission. As the war ended and the Holocaust came to light, some of the former Hitler Youth, now Nazis, will pay for their loyalty.
Whether you use this book as a resource for yourself or share it with the students, it is well worth the read. There is so much eye-opening information. The pictures say so much.
