The Secret of Sarah Revere--Timeline

Page history last edited by Lorna Hammer 17 years, 10 months ago

  • The class will be divided into groups of 2-3 students, with similar abilities placed together.
  • A laptop will be given to each group.
  • The rubric will be handed out and explained.
  • Each group is given one of the following three websites which contain timelines.  Pay attention to the difficulty level of each timeline website, and assign accordingly.
  • (1) Lower Reading Level:  library.thinkquest.org/TQ0312848/timeline.htm;  (2) Middle Reading Level:  www.socialstudiesforkids.com/articles/ushistory/revolutionarywartimeline.htm;  (3) Upper Reading Level:  http://www.nps.gov/archive/cowp/timeline.htm.
  • Each group prints out their main timeline framework.
  • Students will discuss with each other the details and relevance of each event, and click on any links needed for further explanation.  Some timelines are more detailed than others and may contain information which is not pertinent.  It is up to the students to decide what is relevant.
  • Information to be highlighted includes anything that: relates to the story we’ve just read, The Secret of Sarah Revere or otherwise relating to the Revolutionary period and of interest to the group.
  • Students will highlight important events on the general timeline, and write comments next to the line, explaining this event.  Students are encouraged to "teach" each other about what they know.
  • Students will take turns with note-taking and highlighting, signing their name next to those events that they've explained.  This will be turned in for assessment.
  • After each group is finished, the teacher calls on different people to come up and personally add their event to a collaborative timeline using the Dipity timeline tool, which is free, interactive and capable of storing pictures and videos.  Teacher assigns groups one event to display, giving students a few minutes to come up with wording, pictures, and possibly, even, video.  The dipity program has a lot to offer.  Please see http://www.dipity.com/0033114.
