The Legend of Minnesota_Cooperative Learning

Page history last edited by Siri Anderson 14 years, 11 months ago

My unit is on American Indians, with topics of how geography, climate, and resources affect the way of life.  Students would do a cooperative learning about the changes that have occurred in the environment and animal habitats since the 1700's have evolved the way of life.

To accomplish this, the students would be split into groups of 4 and using the jigsaw method of cooperative learning they would also create a poster board to be presented to the class.

Each student would be responsible for 1/4 of the poster board.

The areas of topic are:

  • modification of environments
  • industrialization
  • use of natural resources
  • wildlife disappearance and dangers

Positive interdependence- Students will have time to discuss their projects with group members.  Each member will have a specified topic to become the expert of knowledge on within the group and to be responsible for their part of the poster board.  Each student is responsible to relay information to other members of the home group.

Face to face-  Students will reteach their expert knowledge to their home group.  By teaching one's knowledge to each other they will be able to connect their findings to the concept of the poster.  By effectively relaying and reteaching their learning to the home group they become accountable to each other and for the goal of a great poster.

Individual and group accountability- Individual accountability exists with the relay of information learned to the home group and through the interpretation displayed on the poster board.  Group accountability is the final product and presentation of the poster board.  Students will be graded individually by the teacher on their contribution to the poster board using a rubric that includes group participation and creativity displayed on topic.  Students will also have to write a summary of what they learned from the other groups presentation.

Interpersonal and small group skills-  During their time researching in the expert group and teaching of info to members of the home group students will work on skills of communication, leadership, and trust building.  Students will have to gather necessary research and materials for poster board display.

Group processing-  After all groups present their boards, the class will have a discussion on the similarities and differences in the presentations.  An anonymous individual critique form on members of your group will be done.  Students will write one strength and weakness for each member of their group and the group as a whole.  Each group will review each others comments so they can verify their strengths and weakness for learning advancement.
