Summary

The Breadwinner is a story about 11 year old Parvana, who lives with her family in a Taliban controlled area of Afghanistan.  Parvana, whose parents are both educated, is not allowed to attend school or leave the home without an escort.   When the Taliban takes Parvana's father and throws him in prison, Parvana must disguise herself as a boy in order to earn money in the marketplace to support her mother and siblings.  In her deceased brother's clothing and short, "boyish" haircut, Parvana gets a taste of freedom as she reads for illiterate people in the market.  Parvana's family is able to survive due to her courage as she leaves their home each day and ventures into the dangerous city.
