Number of Pages: 227
This book is about a young teenage girl named, Billie Jo, and her families struggles as they lived through the Great Depression in the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma during1934 - 1935. The story is told in free verse poems through the eyes of Billie Jo. Billie Jo and her family faced many challenges: her mother died after an accident with kerosene and Billie Jo blames herself; also, the family was struggling, financially, trying to grow wheat during a drought and horrible dust storms. The U.S. Government tried to help the farmers by giving them more wheat to plant-- but the farmers still needed rain. The Government also stepped up programs to help the farmers learn about crop rotation and they helped plant trees for a wind break. Once the rain started to fall, things turned around for many folks who were suffering during the Dust Bowl.
This picture is was taken in 1935. Like most dust storms this one too came out of nowhere.
