Citizen Action Lesson Plan

Grade: 5th grade

Unit Essential Question: Why does racism exist?

Lesson Theme: Become an Informed Voter

Author: Karen Schulte

Objective: Students who have been studying African Americans struggles for equal rights will encourage present day eligible voters to get out and be an informed voter by producing a Public Service Announcement for the local access tv channel. In it, they will encourage people not only to get out and vote but to be an informed voter.

Lesson: This collaborative effort will have 3 groups that will be formed around their purpose (Group 1 - who and when, Group 2 - where and how, and Group 3 - when and why). Each group will have writers, researchers, performers, director, etc. with the teacher doing the final video taping.

Group and whole class collaboration is essential. Each group needs to include at least two outside sources of information citizens could access and work it clearly into their portion of the PSA (website, phone number, address, contact name, etc.). Assessments for the collaboration include a rubric grading each group’s segment as well as one for individual contributions.
